Boys Tennis Match – Banning vs. Narbonne
Congratulations to the boys tennis team for a sublime effort in Monday’s match vs. Narbonne.
Despite the final score, things were much closer than it would seem, as there were three 3-set matches, and 3 tie-break
sets, that for one reason or another, simply didn’t go the Pilots’ way.
In singles, Juan Gomez played a great 1st set vs. the Gauchos’
#1, while Alex Chun hung tough as well. Manuel Leon fought hard to try to force a 3rd and deciding
set, yet lost in the 2nd set tie-break. Enrique Esparza, making his varsity debut at singles, played an inspirational
match, as he barely missed out on taking the 1st set, in a close tie-break. However, refusing
to be discouraged, he dug in & dominated his opponent 6-1 in the second, before finally faltering in another close set
in the 3rd.
In doubles,
Miguel Pila & Daniel Gomez avenged their only doubles loss this season, with an impressive straight sets victory.
Eric Mendez & Angel Amador seemed to be cruising after taking the 1st set, yet had a major hiccup in
the 2nd. After regrouping, they jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the 3rd, yet somehow
were unable to sustain the momentum, as their opponents mounted a massive comeback to take the set and the match.
In the closest match of the day, Robert Guerrero & Abraham Moreno played their hearts out. After
splitting the 1st two sets 6-4 each time, the final dramatic set would prove to be even closer, as it remained
close throughout, while Guerrero & Moreno forced the tie-break. In the tie-break, the back-and-forth
affair would continue until the Gauchos finally prevailed 8-6 in that tie-break to close out the set and the match.
In JV/Exhibition action, the Pilots had
the rare opportunity to play full matches, and they took full advantage, as Isai Chun & Oscar Renteria, Juan Mijares &
JoeAnthony Rodriguez, as well as Jonathan Arredondo & Rodrigo Chacon all won in straight sets, giving the Pilots much
to be optimistic about in the future.
In other news, congratulations to Alex Chun & Manuel Leon who resumed play from a rain-suspended match on 3/23 &
captured 2 wins. For more info, click here.
Great Job Pilots,
& Good Luck in the team’s home finale, on Senior Day, vs. San Pedro on Thursday!
