Re-Cap of 3/23/11
Boys Tennis Match – Banning vs. Narbonne
Congratulations to the Boys Tennis Team for their effort under horrible weather conditions during
Wednesday’s incomplete match vs. Narbonne. Despite the fact that play was suspended (until 4/11),
the outcome was decided with the Gauchos taking 4 of the 5 matches that were completed.
In Doubles, Robert Guerrero & Hector Briseño dominated,
producing the straight-sets “dozen donuts” shutout. Meanwhile, Miguel Pila & Daniel Gomez
fought through a very back-and-forth 1st set, before seemingly finding their groove as they quickly jumped out
to a 5-2 2nd set lead. As they began to look ahead to a potential decisive 3rd set,
however, the Gauchos mounted a comeback in the 2nd to take the match. Ryo Miralles & Angel
Amador cruised in the first set winning 6-3, but quickly found themselves facing a decisive 3rd set as they seemingly
lost the 2nd in the blink of an eye. Despite a great effort in the 3rd, the Gauchos
seized the momentum, riding it all the way to a 6-3 win.
In Singles, Eric Mendez & Juan Gomez struggled versus some tough competitors, yet took a game
apiece from their opponents. In the other two singles matches, suspended due to heavy rain, Alex Chun &
Manuel Leon have incredibly bright prospects for bringing home their individual victories when play resumes on April 11th.
Alex Chun won his 1st set 6-4, and trails the 2nd 5-6, yet still holds hopes of winning in straight
sets. Manuel Leon battle through a tough 1st set loss, yet overcame a 2nd-set deficit
to even up the match at one set apiece after winning the 2nd set at 7-5 just as play was suspended.
Due to the suspension of play, there were no
JV/Exhibition matches.

Update from 4/11/11
Congratulations to Alex Chun &
Manuel Leon for winning their previously suspended matches, after a rain-out during the 3/23 match at Narbonne. After losing
his regularly scheduled match, Alex Chun faced the possibility of facing 2 losses on one day. Meanwhile,
his opponent, came into the match after winning a dramatic 3-set match. As play resumed, Chun had previously
secured the 1st set, yet trailed 5-6 in the 2nd set. He won the 1st game
to force a 2nd set tie-break, as he attempted to close it out in straight sets. However, it
was not to be. The 3rd set continued to be a very back-and-forth affair, with Chun finally prevailing
6-4 in the 3rd. Meanwhile, Leon resumed his match tied at 1 set a piece. In the third set, Leon
battled despite losing his match from earlier in the day, in a hearbreaking tie-break. Meanwhile, his opponent
was on the opposite end of that equation, winning his regularly scheduled match in a dramatic 3rd set tie-break.
Leon, however, would recoup from the loss, taking the 3rd set & the match. As a result
of the completion of these two matches the final score will officially go down as 4-3(as opposed to 4-1) in favor of the Gauchos.
