Re-Cap of Boys Marine League Tennis Match - Banning vs. Carson 04/01/09
Congratulations
to the Boys Tennis Team for another great effort vs. Carson on Wednesday. The day was marked by several improved performances
that the team will surely draw inspiration from as they now prepare to take on the rest of the league in round 2 of league-play.
In
singles, there were improved performances all around, as the Pilots took a total of 5 games there improving significantly
from the 1st matchup. Leading the way there was Daniel Gomez who stole 3 games.
The doubles were once
again, much more competitive. Playing his first match of the season, Diego Mayorga teamed up with Joseph Mejia and took
5 games in a good match. Ricardo Zaragoza & Ignacio Torres proved to be a challenge for their Colt opponents once
again, drawing close late in the 2nd set before finally falling at 4-6. The 3-setter of the day, however,
included Hernan Suarez & Justin Garcia who played some great tennis and seemed on the verge of avenging their loss earlier
this season, after easily taking the 1st set. After dropping the 2nd, these two Pilots continued
to fight through what seemed like an infinite number of deuce games, and drew as close as 4-5 in the 3rd set, and
deuce once again, before finally falterin.
In JV action, Eric Mendez & Kevin Reyes fell just short of victory in
a 6-8 effort, while Alex Chun & Kwang Lee faced off against 2 top Varsity players, which included the defending city champion
from the individual doubles tournament, and his former partner who was also a finalist in the same tournament 2 years ago.
Chun & Lee played some incredible points that included an array of winners versus some very high-quality opponents, and
they even managed to take 4 games from the Colts.
Great Job Pilots & rest up for the re-match at San Pedro after
spring break!
