Re-Cap of Boys Marine League Tennis Match - Banning vs. Carson 3/18/09
Congratulations to the Boys Tennis Team for a great effort vs. Carson on Wednesday in the Marine League opener.
The Colts came prepared to avenge their defeat here from last year & did just that.
Despite being
outgunned in singles, Jaramillo, Duran, Gomez & Pila all played well & produced several good points off of much more
experienced competition that included 2 former & reigning all-city selections, & city champs. (Sarmiento, Singles
2007 & Sarawasi, Doubles 2008)
However, in doubles it was a much different story as all 3 matches
were much more competitive. In a great effort, 3-year teammates Hernan Suarez & Justin Garcia played magnificently
& even created a significant 4-1 2nd-set lead before finally faltering. Ricardo Zaragoza & Ignacio
Torres played their hearts out in an all-out fight to the finish that went the distance. After eeking out the 1st-set
in a very tight tie-break, these two Pilots fought hard to stay alive after the Colts won 10 of the next 13 games. However,
refusing to give up, Zaragoza & Torres fought back to tie the match at 4-all in the 3rd set of a match that
outlasted every other one on court and drew crowds of onlookers, before finally succumbing. Earlier in the day, however,
Joseph Mejia & Marcus Macias showed just how much the pre-season schedule prepared them, by producing the only win of
the day for the Pilots in a straight-set drubbing of the Colts & preventing the team shut-out.
In
JV action, Alex Chun & Kevin Reyes continued their own impressive improvement by posting an 8-4 win there, while Eric
Mendez & Hector Briseno fell just 1 game short of doing the same.
Greay Job Pilots & Good Luck
vs. San Pedro on Wednesday!
