Re-Cap of 3/14/09 1st Serve Tournament
Congratulations to the Boys Tennis Teams for their performance in this weekend's
1st Serve Tournament at West Torrance High School. The tournament was also held at two other sites in Orange
County and San Diego over two weekends, and is put on by the Southern California Tennis Association. The tournament hosted
over 40 of the top teams in all of southern California, while the Pilots finished seventh in their bracket.
While taking their lumps against Sage Hill, West Torrance & El Segundo, the Pilots
were able to notch an individual victory over North Torrance & a team victory vs. Marine League rival: Narbonne.
In that match, Hernan Suarez & Justin Garcia dominated their opponents 6-1, while Joseph Mejia grinded out a close, come-back
win at 7-5.
In addition to some great efforts over the course of
several matches in a single day, (up to 6 for one player), Daniel Gomez & Ricardo Zaragoza produced perhaps the two best
shots of the entire day. Gomez had a point-saving, diving volley for a winner, while Zaragoza used his creativity in
chasing down an overhead & returning it with a remarkable under-the-leg winner that shocked & amazed all spectators
in a tough tie-break vs. West Torrance.
Congratulations for another
great effort in preparation for the opening of Marine-league play vs. Carson on Wednesday.
