Re-Cap of 3/2/09 Boys Tennis Match vs. Westchester
On
Monday, the Boys Tennis Team began the process of rebuilding the program, following the departure of most of last year's
starting lineup. The team's first test would come against Westchester. Interestingly enough, Westchester was
also the team's first playoff opponent in 2006, with the Comets dominating that matchup. However, with both teams
undergoing many changes since then, the previous result would not come into play at all.
In singles
play, Justin Garcia, playing his first varsity match as a regular starter, played well, falling just short of capturing the
first set. Ricardo Zaragoza hung tough early on, but never seemed to get on track. Hernan Suarez & Carmelo
Jaramillo also struggled, but had some good points throughout.
In doubles, Joseph Mejia & Daniel
Gomez battled in their first match ever versus two giant opponents, while Ignacio Torres & Austin Macias definitely showed
a lot of heart, consistently challenging their opponents in two extremely tight sets. Newcomers Victor Duran & Miguel
Pila also played extremely well in their first match ever, capturing the only set for the Pilots on the day, in a tremendous
3-set contest.
In exhibition play, Hector Briseno & Robert Guerrero led the way for all the newcomers
there, staying close throughout their match which was all evened up after the first 10 games, at 5-all, before finally succumbing.
Steve Chavez & Alex Chun, as well as Kwang Lee & Eloy Ruiz escaped a shutout in their first outing, while Eric Mendez
& Kevin Reyes played well despite their lack of experience
Congratulations on a great effort Pilots!
