Re-Cap of Boys Alumni Day 2/21/09

Thanks to all the Alumni who came out for the 3^rd annual Boys Tennis Alumni & Friends Day on Saturday, 2/21/09.  The class of 2008 was well-represented with Richard Cortez, Jacob Loy, Rozairo Miralles, Fernando Moncloa, John Ngo, Oliver Arreaga, Andres Suarez & All-City Pick Nancy Melgoza from the girls' team checking in. The class of 2007 was represented by Juan Tafolla, while Leo Cabrera was the lone rep for the class of 2006 with Richard Miralles rounding out the group as 2005's rep.  Finally, Robert Miralles represented for the Old School, proudly representing the class of '71.  Joining the Alumns, were the Friends: Ryan Sabado, Ryo Miralles, Kathy Ngo.  Spectators Ms. Guerrero, Joseph Guerrero & Jessica ??? rounded out the list of guests for the day.

Fulfilling the vision of a more formalized competition, the day got started with the match-ups set as the current Pilots would take on the Alumni & Friends' team in a 14-player match featuring 7 doubles pairings.  The current Pilots got off to a hot start, as #1 doubles Ricardo Zaragoza & Ignacio Torres took out 2007's & 2008's MVPs Jacob Loy & John Ngo, who finished off last year's team play with a perfect 6-0 record in the team's playoff run.  Even more impressive, however was the final score of 6-2, indicating a possible doubles partnership of Zaragoza & Torres that might be looking to make a run of their own possibly in this year's individual playoffs.

The Alumni & Friends' team, however, would not take any more losses on the day.  Highlighting their team's win was Robert & Ryo Miralles who posted the only 6-0 shutout of the day, while Fernando Moncloa & Nancy Melgoza out-battled Diego Mayorga & Joe Mejia, Rozairo Miralles & Kathy Ngo had to come back from a 2-4 deficit vs. Justin Garcia & Victor Duran in the two closest matches of the day.  Newcomers Kwang Lee & Steve Chavez built an early lead on the dynamic duo of Juan Tafolla & Will Guzman, while all others were also able to be competitive and avoid the shutout.

Thanks again to all those who were able to make it out to the fun-filled event & a special thanks the Ms. Guerrero & Son for hookin' up the team with some extra grub towards the end of the day. (That fried chicken & fresh fruit really hit the spot!)
