Re-Cap of 11/12/08 Playoff Match vs. Kennedy – Quarterfinals Congratulations to the Lady Pilots
Tennis Team for advancing to the semi-finals of the playoffs after their historic 5-2 win over last year's runner up,
Kennedy. According to an informed alum, this is the furthest that the Pilots have advanced since the Pilots actually
won the boys title 32 years ago in 1976. The upset win was a solid one, as all 5 wins came in straight
sets. In doubles partners Veronica Trujillo & Jasmin Jimenez once again took care
of their match winning 11 of the last 15 games, while Sandra Medina & Victoria Martinez got on track late in the match
& seemed poised to mount a tremendous comeback in the 2nd set, but fell just short. However,
it was Patty Ledesma & Anais Noriega who would provide the dramatic & historic moment as they clinched the match for
the Pilots with a straight-set win of their own. In singles, it was literally
just a few seconds after the Pilots clinched, that Diana Alvarado would win her match & provide the final margin of victory
that ended up being the “cherry on top.” Just before that, Norma Santamaria attempted her comeback
in a very tight match & played with a lot of heart & poise. Earlier in the day, Cristina Alvarado, & Kathy Ngo
helped to put the Pilots in the winning position in the first place by both winning their first sets. Alvarado
seemed to be rolling to an easy victory before her #1 singles opponent mounted an attempt at a comeback, closing in at 4-5.
Kathy Ngo faced a 0-3 deficit early in the 2nd set, but won 7 of the last 9 games as she & Alvarado
really clamped down when it mattered most as their Cougar opponents refused to give up. Prevailing as the underdog, going into yesterday's match, the Pilots now look to take a shot at #1 seed Venice
next Wednesday at the Balboa Tennis Center in Encino, CA. Incredible Job Pilots & Good Luck next week in the SEMI-FINALS!
