Congratulations to the Pilots for a good effort vs. Narbonne during the team's league opener
on Wednesday. Despite the loss, the Pilots' play saw tremendous improvement from the beginning of the competition towards
the end. In singles, Jorge Zavala dropped the first set, managing to win only 1 game, yet bounced back in a major way
to push the 2nd set to 12 games. After barely missing out on the 1st set, Daniel Gudino rebounded by winning the 2nd
set to force a decisive 3rd. In doubles, Michael Gonzalez battled illness and a very disappointing shutout first set,
and teamed up with JoseAngel Sotelo as they offered some hope for the 2nd round of league play in 2 weeks by forcing a tie-break
in the 2nd set. Fernando Corona & Esteban Zavala increased their games-won total to 4 games in the 2nd set, while
Gerardo Lopez & Omar Renteria added only the 2nd of 2 total sets won by the Pilots on the day, by taking the 2nd set in
a tie-break, to force a 3rd set as well. In JV/Exhibition action, there was a slew of positives for the Pilots on an
otherwise disappointing day. Jonathan Bustamante & Nestor Hernandez produced yet another 8-0 shutout, while Travis
Nash & Eli Villareal impressed, with an 8-3 over the Gauchos'#3 varsity doubles squad. Finally, Hugo De La Cruz
& Gerardo Reyes posted an incredibly exciting comeback win. After trailing 1-4 in the tie-break, Cruz & Reyes took
the next 6 points in a row in to finish off the match in dramatic fashion. Great job Pilots & good luck at San Pedro
on Friday!
