Banning Pilots Tennis

2014 Marine Leage Singles & Doubles Championships 4/26/14

Pilots Add 2 More Championships to the 2014 Season...

Congratulations to the boys tennis team for their incredible performance during the 2014 Marine League Singles and Doubles Championships.  The Pilots were 9-3 on the day, with 2 of those 3 losses coming at the hands of their own teammates.  The day featured an All-Banning semifinal in doubles, as well as an All-Banning championship in singles.

In doubles, JoeAnthony Rodriguez and Isai Chun proved why they were the #1 seed in the tournament. After dispatching Narbonne's second pair in straight sets, they then turned their attention to their hungry teammates, the #4 seeds, Chris Leon and Cristian Talavera, who gave them all they can handle, as they pushed them to a 2nd set tiebreak. They then faced the Gardena's top pair, and overall #2 seed, which presented them with the daunting task of having to beat the same opponent for the third time in one season. Rodriguez and Chun rose to the occasion, dominating the first set before closing it out in the second to claim the 2014 Marine League Doubles Championship, and the Marine League's automatic bid to the 2014 CIF LA City Section Doubles Championships.

In singles, it was a far different story. The Pilots were fortunate to receive a #4 seed for Manuel Leon, and a #6 seed for Walter Camacho. Despite being the higher seeded player, Leon was first forced to defeat Gardena's second ranked player, who had just beat him on Wednesday. He did so in three sets, which then pitted him against San Pedro's #1 player, and overall #1 seed in the tournament, who had also beat Leon the last time out. Leon dominated in two sets to reach the final.

Despite playing as the Pilots' #2 singles player most of the season, Walter Camacho showed that he was one of the top players in the league, and capable of competing with anyone, after a very close loss to Carson's #1. However, in order to claim the title, Camacho would have to really be on top of his game, to defeat the #1 players from three different schools, including his own. Camacho did just that. In what many might have seen as an impossible task, Camacho produced perhaps the most impressive run in the history of the tournament. After dismantling Narbonne's top player, and the overall #3 seed in the tournament in straight sets, Camacho then had his chance for vengeance against the #1 player, and overall #2 seed from Gardena, that had easily dismissed him on Wednesday. After an extremely close first set tiebreak, Camacho would control the action for most of the next two sets to advance to the final against Leon.

The final did not disappoint, as Leon and Camacho split the first two sets as well as the first 10 games of the final set, before Camacho finally prevailed to claim the title of 2014 Marine League Singles Champion, and almost guarantees him a spot in the 2014 CIF LA City Section Singles Championships.

Amazing job Pilots, and way to go!
