Re-Cap of 5/3/13 Boys Tennis Match - Banning vs.
Taft - Quarterfinals Invitational Playoffs
Congratulations tot eh Boys Tennis Team for
pulling off the dramatic upset victory over Taft on Friday. With the win, the Pilots have now matched the team's furthest
advance in the playoffs in at least the past 20+ years, achieving back-to-back appearances in the semifinals. In singles,
Chris Leon & Juan Mijares both won one match, while Julian Frausto had a tremendous Varisty debut winning two grind-out
matches in what ended up being an extremely tight team win. In doubles, Manuel Leon & Ryo Miralles, as well as Walter
Camacho & Jonathan Soria all swept their doubles matches. Leon & Miralles were dominant in their performances,
while Soria & Camacho pulled out some really close ones in one of their few doubles appearances. Finally, Isai Chun
& JoeAnthony Rodriguez were caught reeling after being upset by Taft's #3 pair, yet recovered in time to beat the Toreadores'
2nd pair to set up the dramatic conclusion. With the overall score dead even at 13 ½ each, Chun &
Rodriguez carried the weight of knowing that it was 100% up to them, as even on more singles win would not clinch it. Chun
& Rodriguez played perhaps the best tennis of their careers so far, serving up a bevy of aces & winners as they jumped
out to a big lead and closed it out when things got tight to deliver the win. Awesome Job Pilots & Good Luck in
the Semifinals on Tuesday!
