Re-Cap of 10/31/12 Girls Tennis Match - Invitational
Playoffs - Banning vs. Kennedy.
Congratulations to the Lady Pilots for an amazing playoff
victory over Kennedy on Wednesday. Banning, who finished 4th in the Marine League faced off the Cougars,
who finished tied for 2nd in the Valley Mission League.
In singles, Jocelyn Cuevas &
Natalie Martinez dominated for Banning. Cuevas reeled off 11 games in a row at one point after trailing 1-3 early in the 1st
set. Martinez was never was challenged. Sabrina Serrano also played well after trailing 1-4 to tied it at 5-all in the
1st set before going down.
In doubles, Freshmen Leslie Leon & Natalia Vasquez played
2 very tight sets, as did Sophomores Marivi Angel & Brenda Torres, with the difference, of course that Angel/Torres pulled
out the close one that set up the final drama.
#1 doubles squad, Liesel Montañez &
Renae Reyes, fresh off an amazing comeback from being down 2-7 vs. Narbonne in the quarterfinals of the Marine League Doubles
Championship, had another gut-wrencher. Montañez & Reyes trailed 1-4 in the 1st set before they
tied it at 6-all to force the tie-break. Tie break was pretty intense going all the way to 8-6 in that final game. Montañez
& Reyes cruised in the 2nd to then force a 3rd set, which by the time it started was the only match
left. The overall team score was tied at 3-all. In that 3rd set, there were no breaks until the 7th
game, which the Pilots broke at luv, then held their next 2 service games to close it out. In that 10th game,
there were several break points, but Montañez & Reyes kept getting it back to deuce before finally giving the Pilots
the win.
In JV/Exhibition action, Elizabeth Cano & Alina Parra, had a rare opportunity to square
off against a playoff opponent, winning their match 8-4, while Alondra Gudino & Amber Velasquez also won 8-3.
Amazing Job Pilots & Good Luck as the team faces the winner of Taft & Southeast in the quarterfinals
on Friday at Banning!
