4 Pilots Advance to 2nd round!
|
 |
Congratulations to the Boys Tennis Team for a great showing during the first round of the individual
playoffs, After sending a record 8 (of 10) starters to the individual tournaments, the Pilots played some great tennis
& advanced 4 of those 8 to the second round.
In singles, Oliver Arreaga played a tough Roosevelt opponent &
consitently frustrated & dumbfounded his opponent with an array of shots, before falling in straight sets. Will
Guzman also played well vs. El Camino's #1 player, & even built an early lead, before going down in straight sets
as well.
In doubles, Jonathan Melgar & Ricardo Zaragoza also built an early lead & played an extremely
tight match vs. their opponents from Granada Hills, that featured what seemed to be an endless string of deuce games.
Despite falling short of the victory these two Pilots played awesome, especially considering Zaragoza's lack of experience
as a 1st-year player & the lack of playing time together. The match however, gave a good insight into a possible
top tandem for next year's squad.
Jacob Loy & Andres Suarez became the team's first pair to advance
on the day, putting Loy's post-season record at 7-0. The feature match of the day, came from Rozairo Miralles &
John Ngo who faced off vs. Elizabeth LC's top duo in a tightly contested match. After the Pilots took the first
set with relative ease, the Bulldogs fought back to even the match with a 6-4 2nd set over the Pilots. Miralles &
Ngo, however would fight back themselves, as they overcame a 3rd set deficit & finally "put the nail in the coffin"
on a service winner from Ngo. Fighting off Miralles' severe cramps in the valley heat, these two Pilots held
on for the victory overcoming a lot of frustration in the process & allowed the Pilots to advance 2 entries into the 2nd
round for the 2nd year in a row.
Great job Pilots & good luck on Thursday in the 2nd round!
