Re-Cap of
4/30/08 Playoff Match vs. Birmingham
Congratulations to the boys tennis team for an amazing effort in Wednesday’s quarterfinal
match vs. Birmingham. Although the Pilots won’t be moving on, we’re extremely proud of their
play, especially considering that out of the 25 matches played, the team was only a few points & 2-3 matches away from
moving on to the semi-finals. Also, in the head-to-head matchups, the Pilots won 4-3, winning all of their
evenly ranked matches.
In singles, #1 Andres Suarez stretched the Patriots’ #1 to a tie-break, which helped Will Guzman, who
had the upset of the day, to finish him off, 6-4. Oliver Arreaga’s play was also noteworthy.
Shortly after handling the Patriot’s #4 player, Arreaga produced the point of the day, diving onto the hard court
for a volley, and then getting back up in time to hit the winner, in a close match vs. Birmingham’s #1 player as well.
Ricardo Zaragoza dominated his #4 matchup 6-1.
In doubles, the Pilots once again dominated, outscoring the Patriots 9 to 4 ½. The
team was led by Jacob Loy & John Ngo who swept again & only gave up a total of 5 games in their 3 matches.
Meanwhile Jon Melgar & Rozairo Miralles took 2 of their 3 matches 7 came back from a 4-5 deficit vs. Birmingham’s
#3. Ignacio Torres & Gabriel Hernandez also played well, handling their #3 matchup in dominant
fashion 6-1.
Great job Pilots & good luck to those 8 players who will continue their playoff run in the individual tournaments.
