Re-Cap of 3/12/12 Boys Tennis Match - Banning vs.
Gardena
Congratulations to the boys tennis team for a valiant effort in Monday's Marine League opener
versus Gardena. Although the team fell just short of total victory, the day was full of some hard-fought matches versus
the defending Marine League Champions.
In doubles, Oscar Renteria & Jonny Soria played well, but struggled against
last year's quarterfinalists in the Marine League Doubles Championships. Juan Gomez & Ryo Miralles cruised to a
1st set win, but just as quickly found themselves down 1-4 in the 2nd set, before winning 6 of the last
7 games to close out the victory in straight sets. Alex Chun & Isai Chun faced a similar predicament after also
coasting to a 1st set lead , yet almost as quickly giving up the 2nd set and facing defeat at 3-5 in
the 3rd. The "Chun-Reyes" brothers, however, still had much fight in them, winning the next 4 games
in a row, to clinch the win & set up the dramatic climax for the team result in the very end.
In singles, Daniel
Gomez & Miguel Pila played admirably versus two of the Marine League's toughest singles players, yet were unable to overcome
their talented opponents. Meanwhile, Manuel Leon seemed to follow suit of the ongoing dramatics of the day's competition,
by also easily winning the 1st set, before also dropping the 2nd. Leon, however, would end the
dramatic affair, with a dominating 3rd set performance.
JoeAnthony Rodriguez, aware of the overall team
situation, stepped on court knowing he'd probably be the deciding factor, with the overall team score tied at 3-all before
his 1st set was even complete. As not only the last match on court, but the only match being played, (as
all JV/Exhibition matches had also already been completed) Rodriguez battled ferociously, as he and his opponent fought back
and forth to a 1st-set tie-break, that required 20 additional points for the set to be decided. Encouraged
by how close the 1st set was, and undoubtedly spurred on by all 23 of his teammates, and 20+ more Banning Volleyball
players, JoeAnthony re-entered the skirmish and continued to keep it close until the 8th game of the set, when
his opponent seemed to take control, with a 5-3 lead. Fueled by the Pilots' cheers, however, Rodriguez continued to
scrap for every point, winning the next 3 games in a row, as seemingly all eagerly anticipated a 3rd set.
It was not to be, however, as his opponent regained the momentum, forced a 2nd tie-break, and closed it out in
one of the most dramatic matches between the Pilots & Panthers in recent history.
In JV/Exhibition
action, the Pilots took 4 of the 7 matches played with Kevin Lam & Juan Mijares, Rodrigo Chacon & Chris Leon, Alex
Arredondo & Cristian Talavera, as well as Ramon Sanchez & Walter Camacho all victorious for the Pilots.
