Re-Cap of 11-10-11 Girls Tennis Matches – C.I.F. L.A. City Section Doubles Championships – Round of 16

Congratulations to  Melissa Garibay & Becky Rodriguez of the Lady Pilots Tennis Team for an amazing 3-set victory over the top doubles squad from L.A.C.E.S. in the Round of 16 of the C.I.F. L.A. City Section Doubles Championships at the Balboa Tennis Center in Encino, on Thursday.

Facing the top pair from L.A.C.E.S who had beaten the Marine League Doubles Champions from Narbonne in the team playoffs, Garibay & Rodriguez knew they’d have a tough match on their hands.  However, the experienced pair and #4 seed in tournament, had been here before and took the 1st set easily.  In the 2nd set, L.A.C.E.S. seemed to increase their intensity level, and evened the match at 1-set apiece after a failed attempt by Melissa & Becky to even the match at 5-all in that 2nd set.

After an extended break, Garibay & Rodriguez once again took the court ready to prove why they were seeded in the tournament & impressed upon their opponents their will to return to the quarterfinals with an impressive 6-2 win in the 3rd set, leaving no doubt about their heart or their passion.

With the win Melissa & Becky now automatically qualify for the All-City Team and puts them among the last 8 doubles teams standing out of close to 500 doubles players in the entire C.I.F. Section.  In the entire school’s history, this is only the third time that a pair from Banning has made it this far, and is actually the 2nd time that Melissa & Becky do so.

Congratulations once again, and good luck vs. Palisades in Monday’s quarterfinal match!
