10-22-11 Marine League Championships

Pilots Have a Strong Showing, Hoping More to Come...

RE-CAP OF 10/22/11 GIRLS VARSITY TENNIS 2ND ANNUAL MARINE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Congratulations to Lizbeth Medina & Jamie Vasquez, Luisa Martin & Angel Noriega, as well as Jocelyn Cuevas & Sabrina Serrano for their great performances during Saturday's Marine League Doubles Championships.

As the #7 Seed in the tournament, Jocelyn Cuevas & Sabrina Serrano had the difficult task of taking on their own, higher-ranked teammates in the first round.  However, knowing that in practice they had beaten them before, they were confident going into that match, & quickly jumped out to a 4-1 lead.  Recognizing, that this was their Senior year, however, #2 Seeds Lizbeth Medina & Jamie Vasquez fought back, winning 6 of the next 8 games, & seemed on the verge of a win as they built a 7-6 advantage.  Cuevas & Serrano would re-group to knot things all up at 7-all to force a tie-break, as anxious teammates looked on, knowing that a pair of teammates would be victorious, while the others might be heartbroken.  Medina & Vasquez would finally prevail 7-3 in the tie-break, as their experience/calm apparently became the decisive factor, to advance to the semi-finals, where they would face Narbonne's #2 Doubles squad (#5 Seed) who knocked off Carson's #1 Doubles team who was seeded 4th.

In their 1st round match, Luisa Martin & Angel Noriega cruised to an 8-1 win over an 8th-seeded Gardena squad that was a last-minute fill-in.  However, as the #1 seed in the tournament, their 1st round result was somewhat expected, as they then awaited the results between Gardena's #1 Doubles squad and Narbonne's #1 team to set up the match up in the semi-finals.

In the 1st Semi-Final, Martin & Noriega would fall 8-6 vs. Narbonne's #1 squad who seemed to be growing in confidence with every match.  Despite falling short of their expectations of winning the championships, and thereby the automatic bid into the C.I.F. L.A. City Section Doubles Championships in Encino, CA, Martin & Noriega's spectacular regular season (9-0) still gives them hope.

In the 2nd Semi-Final, Medina & Vasquez faced off Narbonne's #2 squad, who many thought was arguably better than Narbonne's top team.  Also growing in confidence, Medina & Vasquez won easily, 8-4, to set up a true championship grudge-match.  Medina & Vasquez had previously faced off vs. the other finalists twice during the regular season.  In the 1st regular season matchup, they easily built a 7-4 lead before letting it slip away in the tie-break.  Just three days before the tournament, however, Medina & Vasquez avenged that defeat by winning convincingly 8-4.

The championship match would prove to be epic, as the "rubber-match" between these two determined finalists.  Starting out as a very back-and-forth affair, as Medina & Vasquez battled their opponents who, by this time, were very familiar with their playing style.  As the match began to get to "crunch time" Medina & Vasquez seemed to be in control as they prepared to hold serve, up 6-5.  The Gauchos, however, still had some fight in them, and took the next two games, putting the Pilots on the brink of defeat.  Medina & Vasquez, however, weren't done fighting themselves, as they knotted things up at 7-all to force yet another tie-break.  In the tie-break, things seemed to fall apart for the Pilots as they only managed to win one more point.  Once again, however, despite the loss, Medina & Vasquez's impressive results on the year (10-2) still offers a glimpse of hope that they will also make it to Encino.

Congratulations Pilots & Good Luck in the Team Playoffs Next Week!

HISTORY OF THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

In recent years, the L.A. C.I.F. City Section singles & doubles championships have been held at Balboa Tennis Center in Encino, CA.  Prior to the 2010 season, the field consisted of 56 singles entries, and 56 doubles entries.  Each league was granted 6 entries in each.  In 2009, that number was reduced to 5 entries per league in each category. Beginning in 2010, due to drastic budgets cuts, that number was reduced to only ONE guaranteed entry per league in each category.  Due to these cuts, the Marine League Coaches decided to hold a Marine League Championship Tournament for all the best singles & doubles players in the league & established this end-of-season championship.  The winner of the tournament is entitled to represent the league in Encino.
