4/30/11 - Marine League Championships

Pilots Well-Represented in Marine League Championships...

Re-Cap of 4/30/11 Boys Tennis Matches – Marine League Doubles Championships

Congratulations to the six Pilots who were selected to participate in the Inaugural Marine League Doubles Championships.  After budget cuts severely limited participation in the C.I.F. L.A. City Section Doubles Championships, the Marine League coaches decided to hold our own post-season tournament in order to give players a chance at participating in a post-season tournament, as well as to decide which players would represent the Marine League in the aforementioned C.I.F. tournament held later in the month.

For the Pilots, Eric Mendez & Manuel Leon squared off vs. Narbonne’s #2 doubles squad in a Wild Card Play-In match on Friday, defeating them easily in straight sets to earn the final spot as the #8 seed in the tournament.  They continued to play well in their quarterfinal match, yet fell to the #1 seed, who just happened to be their own teammates.

#6 Seeds, Ryo Miralles & Juan Gomez, played extremely well, despite the fact that they had only played one previous match together.  Facing off vs. the #3 seed in the tournament, (Narbonne’s #1 Doubles squad), they took the first set in a tight 3-set match, yet fell in the end.

#1 Seeds Miguel Pila & Daniel Gomez rightfully gained the top seed in the tournament after going 8-1 as a doubles team, defeating all of the other entries in the tournament during the season.  In the 1st round they faced their own teammates & #8 seeds Eric Mendez & Manuel Leon.  After cruising in the 1st set, however, Pila & Gomez struggled to put them away, yet still managed the straight-set victory.  In the semi-finals, Pila & Gomez entered with confidence vs. Carson’s top tandem, whom they swept during the regular season.  However, after a controversial play gave the Colts the 1st set, Pila & Gomez seemed to fade, as their opponents easily took the 2nd set, and eventually the championship.

Although the tournament was established to determine the Marine League’s automatic entry, the Pilots still hold out hope that Miguel Pila & Daniel Gomez have a chance to earn entry into the C.I.F. L.A. City Section Doubles Championship based on their impressive regular season resumé.

Great Job Pilots on a Great Season!

HISTORY OF THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

In recent years, the L.A. C.I.F. City Section singles & doubles championships have been held at Balboa Tennis Center in Encino, CA.  Prior to the 2010 season, the field consisted of 56 singles entries, and 56 doubles entries.  Each league was granted 6 entries in each.  In 2009, that number was reduced to 5 entries per league in each category. Beginning in 2010, due to drastic budgets cuts, that number was reduced to only ONE guaranteed entry per league in each category.  Due to these cuts, the Marine League Coaches decided to hold a Marine League Championship Tournament for all the best singles & doubles players in the league & established this end-of-season championship.  The winner of the tournament is entitled to represent the league in Encino.
