The Marine League held its end-of-season Meeting on to conclude the season & finalize
decisions about both team and individual singles & doubles playoffs.
In Team News, Congratulations to the Boys Tennis Team for finishing the season, tied with San
Pedro for the 3rd best record in League Play. Although the team still holds out hope of receiving a bid in the team
playoffs, it is rather unlikely due to the team's record in league play. Despite an abundance of close matches, and
an impressive showing in the team's non-league matches, the Pilots finished with an overall record of 5-8, and 3-7 in league.
However, the Pilots will be sending 3 pairs of doubles to the Inaugural Marine
League Championships to be held on Saturday April 30th here at Banning, beginning at 8 a.m. Just a few years ago, the
C.I.F. L.A . City Section Doubles Championships consisted of a minimum of 6 singles players and 6 doubles squads from each
league in the section. However, due to budget cutbacks, the tournament has been drastically reduced, and each league
is now guaranteed only one singles, and one doubles entry into the tournament. To offset this loss of post-season experience,
the Marine League coaches decided to institute a Marine League Championship, with 2011 being the Inaugural year for the boys.
Out of close to 30 singles players, and over 40 doubles players in the league, the top 8 singles players, and top 8 doubles
squads would be selected to participate in this year-end championship to be held annually at Banning High School.
First up for the Pilots, Miguel Pila & Daniel Gomez ended the regular season as the top-ranked doubles team in the Marine
League, garnering them the #1 seed in the tournament. Pila & D. Gomez will face off the #8 seed, which will be decided
by a Play-In match on Friday (See Below). Ryo Miralles & Juan Gomez were also selected for this honor after also
racking up an impressive doubles records, although done mostly separately from each other. Miralles & Gomez are
seeded #6, and will face off vs. the #3 seeds, Kevin Motoyasu & Francisco Claudio, which are Narbonne's top squad.
Finally, after no conclusion to a firm debate, it was decided that Eric Mendez & Manuel Leon would face off versus Narbonne's
Charles Baluyet & Andrew Mun for the 8th and final spot in the tournament. That Play-In match will be held on Friday
April 29th at 2 p.m. at Banning HS.
Congratulations Once Again Pilots & Good Luck in the Marine League
Championships!
