Boys Tennis Match - Banning vs. Carson
Congratulations to the boys tennis team for a tremendous effort vs. Carson on Friday.
Although the team struggled in singles, the doubles were dominant once again, sweeping the Colts.
In singles, Robert Guerrero, Angel Amador, Hector
Briseño & Jonathat Arredondo all played well against very tough, and much more experienced competition.
Although final scores aren’t reflective of such, these gentlemen played with great effort & intensity.
In doubles, Eric Mendez & Manuel Leon overwhelmed
their opponents, winning in straight sets, including a shutout in the 1st set. Miguel Pila &
Daniel Gomez cruised in the 1st set, before a surprising 2nd set hiccup, finally getting on track dictating
the action in a 6-1 closeout 3rd. Meanwhile Alex Chun & Juan Gomez found themselves in a hole after losing
the 1st set, and faced defeat as the 2nd set went to a tie-break after blowing a 5-0 2nd
set lead. However, in the tie-break, they left no doubt, winning 7-1 to force a 3rd, and deciding
set. Seemingly cruising to the win with an early lead, Chun & Gomez had to stay focused as their Colt
opponents struggled to stay in the match, closing in to 4-5. The Pilots, however, won the last game easily
to take the match & preserve the doubles sweep.
In JV/ Exhibition action, Juan Mijares saw his first singles action, winning 4 games in his match while Abraham Moreno
& Isai Chun coasted to a 6-3 win. The story of the day, however, involved Enrique Esparza & JoeAnthony
Rodriguez in a very tight back-and-forth match that went the distance, as both squads battled to a 17th game tie-break.
True to form, the tie-break would continue the pattern from the match as both pairs fought hard to stay in the match.
Esparza & Rodriguez would prevail, however, winning the tie-break 13-11 over two of Carson’s varsity
opponents.
