Re-cap of 3/2/11 Boys
Tennis Match – Banning vs. Contreras
Congratulations to the Boys Tennis Team for a great 6-1 win in Wednesday’s season opener vs. Contreras.
With several standout performances, the Pilots are looking forward to rebounding from 2010’s disappointing season.
In Doubles, the Pilots swept all three matches,
outscoring the Cobras 36 games to only 3. The Pilots were led by #1 doubles Ryo Miralles & Alex Chun
who played very well in a convincing win. However, Manuel Leon, making his career debut, & teamed up
with Daniel Gomez, as well Angel Amador & Jonathan Arredondo, both making their varsity debuts, were all very impressive
producing one shutout set apiece.
In
Singles, Miguel Pila, making the jump from last year’s 6th-ranked player to this year’s #1, was simply
too overwhelming for his opponent, producing the 6-0, 6-0 “dozen donuts” shutout win. Meanwhile,
the excitement of the day would be focused on both Senior Eric Mendez, as well as Juan Gomez, making his varsity debut, in
two extremely competitive 3-set matches. Gomez barely missed out on taking the 1st set in a
close tie-break. The close nature of the set, however, seemed to motivate Gomez who then seemed to find
his groove, winning 12 of the last 16 games with relative ease over a demoralized opponent. Mendez, easily
won his 1st set, yet struggled through a close tie-break loss in the 2nd. After building
a quick 4-1 lead in the 3rd, his opponent threatened again closing the gap to 5-4. Yet, Mendez held on to close
it out in the final match of the day.
In JV/Exhibition Action, all 4 pairs won easily, with a boatload of players making their career debuts.
Isai Chun & Enrique Esparza were impressive in an dominant 8-1 win, while Oscar Renteria & Ruben Rico played
outstanding tennis in an 8-4 victory over two varsity opponents.
Congratulations Pilots & good luck next week vs. Westchester!
