Re-Cap of 2010 Girls Tennis Marine League Championships - 10/30/10 Hosted

Congratulations to Melissa Garibay & Rebeca Rodriguez
for winning the Inaugural Marine League Doubles Championship. After earning a 1st round bye as the #1
seed in the tournament, Garibay & Rodriguez defended that status as they fought back from a 1-7 deficit in their semi-final
match, & won 7 games in a row. In the Final, they dominated from beginning to end, jumping out to a quick 5-2 lead
before closing out the Carson Colts, 8-4.
Patty
Ledesma & Luisa Martin made it an even greater Pilot celebration as they exacted revenge upon their opponents from Gardena
in the 1st round & barely missed out on advancing to the Final. In the 3rd place match, they
defeated Carson's #1 doubles squad in an intense tie-break, taking 5 of the last 7 games, after trailing 5-3 earlier in the
match.
In recent years, the L.A. C.I.F. City
Section singles & doubles championships have been held at Balboa Tennis Center in Encino, CA. The field usually
consists of 56 singles entries, and 56 doubles entries. Each league was granted 6 entries in each. Last year,
that number was reduced to 5 entries per league in each category. This year, due to drastic budgets cuts, that number has
been reduced to only ONE entry per league in each category. Due to these cuts, the Marine League Coaches decided to
hold a Marine League Championship Tournament for all the best singles & doubles players in the league & established
this end-of-season championship.
There was a
tough start to the day, as Friday night's rain, combined with an 8am scheduled start-time, led to a 90+ minute delay to get
the courts dry. EVERYONE, players & coaches alike, chipped in with brooms & squeegees to speed up the process. (Pretty
awesome to see everyone working together like that.) Once everything cleared up, though, it was a great day. Plans
for next season's championship include expanding the field to 8 entries in each category with Banning hosting the event once
again.
