Re-Cap of Boys Tennis Match - Banning vs. San Pedro 4/12/10
Congratulations
to the Pilots Tennis Team for an amazing effort vs. San Pedro on Monday. Despite coming up short of the victory, the Pilots
played with a tremendous amount of heart & determination, fighting until the very end, in the finale of the 1st
round of Marine League play.
In singles, Marcus
Macias & Kwang Lee played well, but never seemed able to find their rhythm vs. a couple of tough Pirates. The other
two singles matches, however, would both be decided in dramatic 3-set matches. First up was Justin Garcia, who dropped
the 1st set, before dominating the next two, as he continuously demoralized his opponent who seemed to give up
before the end. Hernan Suarez, refusing to be discouraged by the score of his 1st-set loss, came roaring
back in the 2nd to force a deciding 3rd. Riding the momentum of the 2nd set, Suarez started
out well, before his opponent settled in an extremely close back-and-forth set that would unfortunately be decided on a 5-4
deuce point.
In doubles, the #1 & #3 doubles
matches served as bookends, as they were both decided in dominant fashion, with "D-squared" taking the #3 match
6-0, 6-1. Joseph Mejia & Miguel Pila forced their opponents to the edge in another exciting, back-and-forth match
where they also dropped the 1st set, before storming back to take the 2nd & force the third 3-set
match of the day. Unfortunately, despite a remarkable effort, they would also lose by the closest of margins in the
3rd.
In JV/Exhibition action, Kevin
Reyes & Juan Gomez, as well as Robert Guerrero & Steve Chavez took turns beating the same opponent. The story
of the day here, however, was Eric Mendez & Angel Amador who defeated a mixed-level Pirate squad, which included one varsity
starter, in convincing fashion, 8-4.
Great Job
Pilots, and Good Luck vs. Narbonne on Thursday in the 2nd round of Marine League competition.
