Re-Cap of 3/28/08 Match: Banning vs. Carson
Congratulations to the Boys Tennis Team for their unbelievable
victory over Carson on Friday. For the past 15+ years, the Pilots have had to face the year-in, year-out
frustration of being unable to overcome the school’s traditional rival. Those 15 years of frustration
came to an end on Friday, as the Pilots decisively ended Carson’s 30+-game win streak over Banning with an inspired
5-2 win.
In Singles, #1 & #2 Singles players Jacob Loy & Fernando Moncloa took on the toughest assignments
of the day (vs. defending Singles City Champ: Sarmiento & Doubles City Runner-up: Sarawasi), giving the Pilots a chance
to deliver; and they did just that. #3 Singles Oliver Arreaga won decisively in straight sets early on,
setting up some drama for later in the match.
In doubles, the story would again be one of facing the pressure of another 3-set match
for both #1 Doubles, Andres Suarez & Jon Melgar, as well as #2 Doubles, Rozairo Miralles & John Ngo. Once
again, both pairs “handled business” as those two clutch performances put #3 Doubles, Hernan Suarez & Ignacio
Torres, in position to be the heroes of the day & clinch the 4th and deciding match.
Things were looking
good as Suarez & Torres led the first set 5-1, and seemed to be in complete control. However, their
opponents mounted a comeback, tying the score at 5-5, forcing extra games which came down to a single deuce-point in the 12th
game to decide the set in favor of the Pilots. It was at then, that Suarez & Torres re-focused their
efforts & left no doubt, as they dominated the 2nd set 6-0 clinching the historic victory for the Pilots.
#4 Singles Will Guzman
would then add the “cherry-on-top” of the win, by taking care of his opponent in straight sets as well, giving
the Pilots the “cushion” of a 3-match margin-of-victory for any possible future tie-breakers.
In exhibition play,
the Pilots were led by #1 Doubles Gabriel Hernandez & Ricardo Zaragoza who defeated a mixed-level Colt squad, while Diego
Mayorga & Justin Garcia played extremely well vs. two Varsity starters in a very close 8-6 loss.
Congratulations
once again, Pilots, for the historic win & sole possession of 1st place in the Marine League! Good
luck on Tuesday at Gardena. J
