Re-cap of 11/20/09 L.A. C.I.F. City Section Individual Doubles Championships -Round 1

Congratulations once again to the Lady Pilots Tennis Team for those players who travelled to the Balboa Tennis Center in Encino, CA for the 1^st round of the L.A. C.I.F. City Section Individual Doubles Championships on Friday. Out of close to 500 doubles players city-wide, these 8 Pilots converged with the top 56 doubles tandems to begin the battle for doubles' supremacy.

Jamie Vasquez & Lizbeth Medina faced off vs. a tough opponent from Verdugo Hills, yet managed to take 2 games.  Melissa Garibay & Rebeca Rodriguez, also new to the tournament, lost a lopsided-looking 1^st set  to Marshall before switching to the seldom-used doubles "I-formation", & took 4 of the first 6 games of the second set en route to building a 5-4 lead.  Seemingly poised to take the 2^nd set & force a deciding super tie-break to decide the match, their opponents somehow turned the tide again & closed out the set. Nevertheless, Garibay & Rodriguez played admirably, as their toughness & 2^nd set adjustments almost garnered the victory for them.

While Kathy Ngo & Sandra Medina were guaranteed a spot in the 2^nd round due to their status as the overall #7 seed in the tournament, Patty Ledesma & Vicky Martinez had to get past Kennedy first.  Armed with the knowledge that one of the two partners from Kennedy had been defeated by Ledesma & her 2008 partner in last year's team playoff, these two Pilots confidently proceded to dismantle their opponents in a dominant 6-2, 6-0 straight-set victory.
