of 10/22/09 Girls Tennis Match - Banning vs. Washington
Congratulations to the
Lady Pilots tennis team for another great victory over Washington on Thursday, achieving their second season sweep of the
year.
In doubles, Kathy Ngo & Luisa Martin,
Victoria Martinez & Dalilia Cornejo, as well as Jamie Vasquez & Lizbeth Medina all produced 8-0 shutouts in dominant
fashion, outscoring the Generals 24 games to 0 overall.
In singles, Sandra Medina had no problem handling her opponent 8-1. Rebeca Rodriguez was all tied up with her opponent
in a grudge match at 3-all through the first 6 games. Rodriguez then zoned in & won 5 of the last 6 games for the
win. Patty Ledesma faced a 1-5 deficit, yet continued to fight, winning 5 of the last 8 games before finally succumbing
to her opponent. In perhaps the most exciting match of the day, Melissa Garibay played tough in a very back-and-forth match.
Trailing 6-7 late in the set, and now only 1 game from losing, Garibay won the next game to force tie-break. In the tie-break,
Garibay built an impressive lead @ 6-2, yet her opponent reeled off 5 points in a row to reach match point & put Garibay
at risk of losing once again. Garibay then fought off 2 match points before winning the tie-break @ 10-8 in dramatic fashion.
In JV/Exhibition play Wendy Arreola & Helly Duran,
as well as Angel Noriega & Carmi Lares easily defeated their varsity opponents, while Cristine Nafarrete &
Jenny Castellon produced a shutout of their own, also over varsity competition. Areli Chun & Brenda Angeles
faced off against Washington's #1 & #3 varsity singles players yet managed to take 4 games including 2 of the last 3.
Meanwhile, Andrea Zaragoza made her season debut & teamed up varsity teammate Rebeca Rodriguez for a 6-1 win.
