2005 – Narrowing the Gap
In the 2nd season of Coach Castillo’s
tenure, the team returned 6 starters and improved dramatically, both in wins and in terms of being competitive with the elite
Marine League teams, finishing with a record of 6 wins and 7 losses. Despite
the fact that the Pilots still lost all 6 contests against San Pedro, Carson & Narbonne, the
margin of victory was cut significantly, as the Pilots lost by a margin of 1 match, 3-4, in all 4 contests against San Pedro
& Narbonne, while taking 3 matches from eventual league champ, Carson. This
was a season of great strides. Not only did the Pilots narrow the gap against
the elite Marine League teams, but in the 1st meeting against Narbonne,
the team was literally 1 point away from winning the match outright. Additionally,
9 different players had winning individual records in varsity competition. Four
players, (Nathan Johnson, Tim Pabustan, Roberto Arreaga & Richard Miralles) were selected to compete in the L.A. C.I.F.
City Section Individual Playoffs in the Doubles Tournament. The field for the
tournament consists of the top 56 doubles teams out of close to 200 doubles teams in the whole city. Two of those players
(Johnson/Pabustan) went deep into the tournament, reaching the round of 16, losing to the eventual 3rd place finishers
from Chatsworth.
The JV team continued its undefeated streak
and extended it to 23 games since Coach Castillo took over the program. Although
some of their wins were by default (not enough players on the opposing team), they played wonderfully every time they had
the opportunity to compete, even against opposing Varsity teams.
