LADY PILOTS TENNIS TEAM RECEIVES EXCITING & HISTORIC NEWS FROM THE PLAYOFF SEEDING MEETING!
Congratulations to
the Girls Tennis Team, once again, for finishing the season at 9-2 and making the playoffs for the 2nd year in
a row. After not being a playoff team for the last 15-20 years, the Lady Pilots now have made even more
history by HOSTING the first playoff match perhaps in the entire history of Banning Tennis. This
is extremely exciting news, especially in light of the fact that the team lost 4 (out of 10) starters from 2006.
This year’s squad finished with an 8-2 Marine League record, good enough for 2nd place.
This is also the highest that the Lady Pilots have finished in at least the past 15-20 years. As
the #7 seed, the Pilots will face off against # 10 LACES in the first round of the L.A. C.I.F. City Section Invitational Playoffs
on Monday at 1:00, here at Banning. Good Luck Pilots!
Also, in more historical achievements for the team, an unprecedented
number of girls were selected to participate in the L.A. C.I.F. City Section Individual Playoffs in Doubles. Out
of close to 200 doubles teams in the city, only the top 56 are chosen to participate. This year, the Lady
Pilots are sending FOUR doubles teams to the playoffs. This is especially significant because it means that 8 of the team’s
10 regular starters made the individual tournament, while most schools only send 1-2 entries. Adding to the significance of
that feat is the fact that each league is normally only allotted a total of 6 doubles entries for the entire league.
This is also extremely rare due to the fact that there are only 3 doubles teams during any given match.
However, all four doubles teams performed extremely well during the season and earned some quality wins.
The four doubles
tandems selected for the Individual Playoffs are:
- #1 Nancy Melgoza & Cinthya
Monroy (who ranked in the top 16 in the city, earning a special “protected” status)
- #2 Veronica Trujillo
& Adriana Garcia
- #3 Melissa Hernandez & Norma Santamaria
- #4 Cristina Alvarado & Diana
Alvarado
Awesome Job Pilots & Good Luck in the Playoffs! J
