Tue. 4/24 - League Seeding Meeting Rewards Hard-Working Pilots!
Congratulations to the Boys Tennis
Team. Despite finishing lower in the Marine League standings this year (3rd place) than in 2006
(2nd place), the team had a better league record (6-3) than in 2006 (6-4), and was awarded the #9 spot in the L.A.
C.I.F. - City Section Playoffs in the Invitational Division. This now marks back-to-back playoff berths
for the team, which surely is the first occurrence in the past 10-15 years. The Pilots will travel to University
High to face the #8 Wildcats on Monday, April 30th at 1:00.
The Pilots also received other amazing news from the seeding
meeting. In singles, Juan Tafolla was selected, out of close to 250 players in the city, to represent Banning
& the Marine League in the Individual Singles Tournament. Also, out of close to 200 doubles teams in
the city, ALL THREE doubles tandems were also selected to participate in the Individual Doubles Playoffs. Heading
to the tournament are #1 Doubles Jacob Loy & Fernando Moncloa (tied for #1 in Marine League), #2 Doubles Andres Suarez
& Fernando Ledesma, as well as #3 Doubles Jonathan Melgar & Oliver Arreaga. This brings the total
to 7 Pilots selected to the Individual Playoffs, out of the 10 regular Varsity players.
(Interestingly enough, Rosendo
Tolento (singles) as well as Octavio Ramirez & Gabriel Hernandez (doubles) were all the 1st alternates &
were all 1 spot away from making history, giving the Pilots a chance at inducting all 10 members of the Varsity squad into
the individual playoffs.)
